NIRVP: A robust structural proxy for sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthesis across scales

چکیده
Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is a promising new tool for remotely estimating photosynthesis. However, the degree to which incoming solar radiation and structure of canopy rather than leaf physiology contribute SIF variations still not well characterized. Therefore, we investigated relationships between variables that at least partly capture component SIF. For this, relied on high-quality observations from ground-based instruments, high-resolution airborne imagery most recent satellite products cover large ranges in spatial temporal resolution diverse ecosystems. We found structure-related near-infrared reflectance vegetation multiplied by sunlight (NIRVP) robust proxy far-red across wide range scales. Our findings indicate contributions variability are small compared components. Also, NIRVP captured spatio-temporal patterns photosynthesis better SIF, seems be mostly due greater retrieval noise Compared other relevant structural proxies, showed more especially global scale. results highlight promise using widely available data monitoring also potential combination extract physiological information

250 words) Recent development of sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) technology is stimulating studies to remotely approximate canopy photosynthesis (measured as gross primary production, GPP). While multiple applications have advanced the empirical relationship between GPP and SIF, mechanistic understanding of this relationship is still limited. GPP:SIF relationship, using the standard ...
متن کاملModels of fluorescence and photosynthesis for interpreting measurements of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence
We have extended a conventional photosynthesis model to simulate field and laboratory measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence at the leaf scale. The fluorescence paramaterization is based on a close nonlinear relationship between the relative light saturation of photosynthesis and nonradiative energy dissipation in plants of different species. This relationship diverged only among examined dat...

Recent satellite observations of sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) are thought to provide a large-scale proxy for gross primary production (GPP), thus providing a new way to assess the performance of land surface models (LSMs). In this study, we assessed how well SIF is able to predict GPP in the Fenno-Scandinavian region and what potential limitations for its application exist. We imp...
متن کاملSolar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence that correlates with canopy photosynthesis on diurnal and seasonal scales in a temperate deciduous forest
Previous studies have suggested that solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is correlated with Gross Primary Production (GPP). However, it remains unclear to what extent this relationship is due to absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) and/or light use efficiency (LUE). Here we present the first time series of near-surface measurement of canopy-scale SIF at 760 nm in tempera...
متن کاملUsing Chlorophyll Fluorescence to Study Photosynthesis*
Each quantum of light absorbed by a chlorophyll molecule rises an electron from the ground state to an excited state. Upon de-excitation from a chlorophyll a molecule from excited state 1 to ground state, a small proportion (3-5% in vivo) of the excitation energy is dissipated as red fluorescence. The indicator function of chlorophyll fluorescence arises from the fact that fluorescence emission...
